InfoLit Meeting Term 2 Week 5 - Research Findings

Present: Chris, Desna, Paul P, Duncan, Paul S, Rob

Agenda:
  1. Big Picture of Information Literacy @ FOS (Rob/Paul S) - this is really our first meeting as a team, so I'd like to start off with the big picture first. We will look at: How QLCs work/the purpose of them, what infolit is, why we need to focus on it at FOS, linkages to Our Way, next steps for our QLC.
  2. Research Results - sharing what each person has been doing in their research - each member to share back: Chris/Desna Library usage for staff & children, Paul P/Rob Staff Survey Results (there was also this evaluation late last year).
  3. Making sense of the research - what does it mean? What next steps does it indicate for our QLC.
  4. Next Steps - What are they? Who is responsible for what?

Links of use:
Minutes:
We discussed why we have QLCs, the purpose and linkages to the annual plan/strategic targets, how infolit is a subset of 'Our Way'.

Observation of Library Use (Desna/Chris):
  • We talked about how timetabling is run and the effect this can have on class usage.
  • We are unsure if everyone knows how to use AccessIt properly.
  • Information skills are not being taught and so we wonder if putting in tools that you would find in a regular classroom make a difference to what happens in the library?
  • Questions/Reccommendations: get some informal learning sessions for using AccessIt (ie. techie brekkies), ideas for what to do when you come to the library, protocol for sending children to the library. People Responsible for developing library usage: Chris, Desna, Rob & Paul S (property side)
Staff Survey Results (Paul P):

  • This is linked in this presentation above.
  • inFOSmart - seen as useful but not widely used, hard to use for juniors, teachers have used the areas which we've run PD on, teachers haven't referred to it regularly as it is hard to find.
  • Questions/Reccommendations: Do we develop the use of inFOSmart, or look at changing it? How do we re-present inFOSmart so it is more accessible and usable? Ideas: targetting how and when people use it (team level planning). People Responsible for marketing inFOSmart: Duncan, Paul P
Actions:
  1. Each person has selected an area to focus on as above.
  2. Please put a comment onto this blog post saying what you will use your next QLC time (week 3, 6 & 9) for so each member knows what we are all doing.
  3. Please post results of your work to this blog with the label of 'infolit' and 'crt use'.

I'd like to look at ways of strengthening the linkages between team planning and the use of the library.

My ideas for this include:
-establishing a system whereby all team leaders inform Desna of their team plans prior to team planning sessions. This could be sharing their google docs with her so she is aware of what is happening.
-I'm going to talk to the Our Way QLC about the template we use for planning to ensure that the links between the library and inquiry are more obvious.

Any other idea, please comment them on this blog post.

The main issue that arose was the need to make inFOSmart visible. The following issues were raised:
1) Promotion of the 6 information skills.
2) Is inFOSmart discrete or is there a need to link with MAD on learning QLC?
3) Should the matrix align with MAD on learning and info skills?
The 3rd point was discussed with Paul S and Claire(MAD on learning QLC)

Objective for next session (wk9) is to clarify next steps wrt information skills.

Property update.

The Ministry rules are proving to be harder to bypass than we had hoped. Basically we are hamstrung by the fact that we can not use 5 Year Property Plan money to add extra building space, we can only use it to upgrade existing buildings. We have $40,000 from PTA fundraising and we can add around $40-50,000 from the Ministry (upgrade money only). The plan therefore needs to be one that only includes the upgrade of inside the library. We could move the entrance and use PTA money to do this but the extra space cannot be too large.

This is all very frustrating but we will continue to work with the Ministry to try and get some more money! The board and I are meeting with the Ministry on Wednesday 18th June.

More to follow...

At this stage we are limited by things outside our control. Eg Is the back wall being moved to create the much needed space? We need to create spaces for people to work, study, read etc. Paint the interior, display boards between shelves. Big cull currently being undertaken in teacher resource area with library to follow.
Need more information before we can go any further with this part of the process.

Just an idea regarding space usage in the school. We would appear to have an over utilised library space and an under utilised multi purpose space! how feasible is it to relocate these spaces to find a satisfactory result providing better service to the students?

Thanks Desna for your input, here is my suggestion:

If some things are out of our control, then we need to focus on what we can control.
